SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS (CONTINUED)

PART VIII: THE TREASURES OF THE MARKET

I believe that the atmosphere of a market speaks loudly of the community it represents. Each market yields its own treasures, some more valuable than others, but treasures nonetheless. A casual stroll through the main market of San Cristobal will arouse not only your taste buds, but stir your imagination, too! It challenges all your senses; visual with the wide array of bright colors, auditory with the constant chatter of negotiations, smell with abundant sweet and tantalizing fragrances, the touch and feel of freshness, and the arousal of your taste buds as you sample the wonderful treasures you’ve discovered. Fruits and vegetables are displayed as an art form. The beans are cleaned and shining before being offered. The flowers are fresh and fragrant. And, all are so very hard to resist. Prices are exceptionally reasonable and well within anyone’s budget.

I didn’t have to get permission to shoot many of these photographs, so enjoy some of the treasures I discovered in the market of San Cristobal de las Casas!

HOT, HOT, HOT! THERE WERE ENOUGH CHILI PEPPERS TO START A FOREST FIRE!

THE VEGGIES WERE SO TEMPTING! A VEGETARIAN'S PARADISE!

FRUITS WERE ABUNDANT AND BECKONING!

I LOVE BEANS AND BOUGHT SEVERAL KILOS WHICH ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN MERIDA.

THE WONDERFUL FRAGRANCE OF THE FLOWERS REALLY ADDED TO THE AMBIANCE OF THE MARKET!

SEAFOOD IS SOLD ONLY DRIED IN THIS PART OF THE MARKET. A WIDE VARIETY OF FRESH SEAFOOD IS AVAILABLE IN THE MEAT, POULTRY, AND SEAFOOD SECTION.

SPICES ARE A BIG PART OF ANY MEXICAN RECIPE AND AE READILY AVAILABLE HERE.

A CHICKEN IN EVERY POT! WHOLE, OR IN PART - YOUR CHOICE.

HOLLOWED OUT GOURDS ARE USED AS DRINKING VESSELS AND UTILITARIAN ITEMS.

YOU CAN FIND YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE HERE, TOO!

FODDER FOR FARM ANIMALS IS SOLD ALONGSIDE FODDER FOR THE PEOPLE!

ONE CAN'T HELP BUT WONDER HOW MANY YEARS OF HER LIFE HAVE BEEN SPENT SELLING IN THE MARKET. A TRUE TREASURE, FOR SURE!

I THOUGHT ABOUT IT, BUT NO - I DIDN'T BUY THE HAT!!

  3. I live in San Cris and you have done a good job photoing the market. There is another larger market on the west end of town but it doesn't have the character of market you were in. The Govt has tried to close the market and move it further away but the Indigenous people said they will not move and so far they haven't.

I want to know how you get your signature on those photos? Can't find it in this blog, must be something on your camera?

  6. Mike,
Not sure if the market pictures were of a food or artisans Mercado... The way the food items were presented were worthy of a Harrods food Hall! Great Shots!
